TEACHINGS - What's In A Name?

"And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS." Luke 1:31 NKJV

Jesus Christ is the Name above all other names! That means that Jesus’ Name is over and above, beyond, more than, higher than, greater than the names of the billions of stars, galaxies and planets; greater than God’s mighty angels, Michael and Gabriel; greater than the names of the Seven Wonders of the world; greater than the names of great men and women of history, Napoleon, Alexander the Great; greater than the greatest scientists and explorers, Isaac Newton, Alexander Graham Bell; greater than the many dignitaries of time, George Lincoln, Mother Theresa and so on and so on. The name of Jesus Christ is more exalted! More excellent! More glorious! More than anyone or anything else. Listen to what the Scripture says,

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11 NKJV

So what is so unique and special about that name? Let’s take a few moments to examine that name above all other names, the name of Jesus Christ, God’s Son.

In the world today when parents are preparing for the birth of a child, many will try to choose a name that will be suitable - one that is appropriate, one that is befitting into the family in which they are born; one that reflects their family even to the extent that children are often named after their forefathers (mothers). Parents try to pick names for their children according to the meaning or implication of that name, hoping that the child will reflect the character of that name and all that it stands for. As a matter of fact, parents shy away from using names that reflect bad experiences or impressions with past acquaintances.

This time of year we remember again that thousands of years ago a child was born to a virgin named Mary in Bethlehem. Immediately, we understand that a child born from a virgin is something miraculous. That can never happen. But it did happen - it is true. The Bible says that a Child was born to a virgin named Mary and an angel informed her and her husband, Joseph, that His Name was to be called Jesus. This child, Jesus, was no ordinary child, He was the Son of God become flesh, so it was vital that His Name identify and reflect who He was and where He came from and what His purpose would be. We read in Matthew 1:20-21 and again in Luke 1:27-35 that an angel announced to both the earthly parents of Jesus that they would have a Son and they were to call His Name Jesus. This is not some name they thought up out of their head, nor did they get it out of a book of names; not at all. This name was given to them by His heavenly Father, God Himself. It had to be that way. This name would reflect and express the character and nature of who He was. This Name would identify Jesus as the very Presence of God Almighty and with that Name came adoration, worship and praise. God had placed upon the shoulders of this child, His Son, the majesty, dignity and glory of Himself. It was really God who would be raising this Child to be exalted above all others. [Next Page]
