What does the name of Jesus Christ mean? The title Jesus comes from the Greek form of the Jewish word Yeshua or Jehovah-Savio,r meaning The Lord saves. The title Christ comes from the Greek form of the Jewish word Messiah, meaning Anointed One, a King and a Priest. So Jesus Christ is The Anointed One who Saves. He is Jehovah; He is The Savior, He is the Messiah, He is The King of kings, He is our High Priest! Hallelujah!

To the Jewish people, a name stood for the full character of a person - all that he does and all that he says - really, all He is as a person. God exalted this Child to the highest place - God put this Child on the same level as Himself, therefore it was only right that God give the Name above all other Names. God actually gave this Child, His own Name, the Name of Jesus. Jesus was God Himself in full view - God made flesh and He dwelt among us. It is no wonder that Isaiah could declare in Isaiah 9:6 that the Child that would be born would bear the government on His shoulder and be called, Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Hallelujah! All of God’s attributes, His character, His power, His authority was given to Jesus in that Name. He is God!

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:1, 14

There is great meaning in the name of Jesus. First of all that Name is a saving Name.

For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. Romans 10:13

There is no other name under heaven and on earth that can save a human soul from the guilt and shame of sin. There is no other name that can forgive sin, there is no other name that can set a captive free, there is no other name that can deliver someone from the chains of bondage, darkness or addictions. There is only one Name, JESUS! The name of Buddha cannot save, the name of Allah cannot save, the name of Mohammed cannot save, the name of Krishna cannot save, the name of Joseph Smith cannot save, the name of Mary Baker Eddy cannot save, the name of Constance Cumbey and the New Age cannot save, the name of religious gods, famous preachers, denominations, presidents, or countries cannot save. Just as God saved His people in the Old Testament when they called upon His Name, those who will call upon the name of Jesus Christ today will be saved and delivered.

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12

When we come to Jesus through faith and call upon His Name to save us from our sins, Jesus forgives us and takes us as His bride. We become married to Jesus Christ and receive His Name. All that Jesus is, now becomes ours. We receive everything, all His promises, His authority, His power - everything!

It’s like this. When I married my wife, she gave up her maiden name to take upon herself my name. My wife now has a new name. She has lost her old identity and has taken on a new identity by taking my name. Not only that, by taking my name, she was committing herself to me, her life, her everything. Every time she uses my name, she is expressing her commitment to me, her love, devotion and her trust in me. By referring to herself as Mrs. Riendeau, she is proclaiming that she is married to me.
